In the summer of 2016, the Washington, D.C.-based Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law asked Benetech to find open source developers to build new technology features for Election Protection, the nation’s largest nonpartisan voter protection coalition that monitors elections across the United States. Our Vote Live, funded by a grant from the Kapor Center […]
Benetech Labs, Benetech’s product development arm, is always on the lookout for partners and collaborators to help us achieve the next big impact. With that goal in mind, we are pleased to announce that Greg Bloom of Open Referral has joined Benetech as a Labs Strategic Advisor in the social service referral field. He will help us engage the community to design and build core infrastructure and products that make it easier for information about social services to reach the people who need it most.

About a year ago, I joined the Benetech Labs’ team to learn more about the role technology plays in improving people’s lives. Benetech has been actively working in this space since 1989, when Jim Fruchterman first founded the organization. Jim’s goal was to improve machine reading and recognition systems and build software for people that […]
Benetech Labs, Benetech’s new product development arm, is on a mission to create innovative, effective, and sustainable solutions for social change by engaging with communities, other technologists, and nonprofits in order to achieve lasting impact. One of the best ways to ensure that the technology we build follows a human-centered design approach is to gain […]

The first rule of solving real-world problems using technology is to work directly with the communities that know the problem space best. That’s precisely what Benetech’s Code Alliance initiative has done by bringing nonprofit organizations together with Google engineers for the annual #GoogleServe event in June at the company’s Mountain View headquarters. Today, many nonprofits […]

Members of Benetech’s Code Alliance team recently organized the first ever CHI4GOOD Day of Service at the annual conference hosted by the Human-Computer Interaction Special Interest Group of the Association for Computing Machinery in San Jose, California. Code Alliance is a Benetech initiative that connects technology professionals to volunteer opportunities with open source software projects for social […]

Last December, Benetech – through its SocialCoding4Good program – was invited to participate in SanDisk’s Day of Service. The event brought together technical employees with two accessibility projects from the DIAGRAM Center, one of Benetech’s Global Literacy initiatives. Approximately thirty SanDisk participants learned about the software tools that Benetech uses to translate images in STEM textbooks […]

From registration with biometric verification to mobile communications and to smart device medicine delivery, the Syrian aid effort exemplifies technology’s potential to transform the humanitarian process. Creating technology solutions that benefit refugees was also the topic of a recent “Hack Lunch” at Yahoo, in which I had the opportunity to represent Benetech and speak to a group of engineers and technologists about social impact technology.
Data for Good, Water for Life: On the Community Water Management Day in Latin America and Benetech Labs’ Clean Water App
Imagine living without being connected to water mains and sewer lines. In Latin America, where access to water and sanitation services is highly unequal, approximately 70 million people experience this reality every day. To have safe drinking water and live with dignity, they depend on more than 80,000 community-based water and sanitation providers, locally known […]
In Summer 2013, Benetech Labs set out to create a platform that empowers water and sanitation community managers in Latin America to share best practices and improve their services, and that also enables institutional funders to evaluate investments in the water and sanitation sector. We’ve made excellent progress with this project and built a diagnostic tool to improve community-based water and sanitation providers’ capacity to provide water and sanitation services to their communities. I’m delighted to share that the Paraguayan government is now using our tool in a nationwide project that aims to advance access to clean water in the country. This is a major step forward in a collaborative effort to tackle the challenges that Latin American community water and sanitation organizations face.
